Welcome to the PEACHSF website! We are parents, teachers, school administrators, healthcare professionals, and advocates for better school food in San Francisco. Since 2002, we’ve worked together to improve food in our public school cafeterias, vending machines, classroom parties and fundraising sales, and we want to share what we’ve learned along the way with others trying to make changes in their own communities.
One third of children in America are now considered overweight or obese, and this generation of kids is the first in modern history to be at risk for a shorter lifespan than their parents, largely due to obesity-related diseases which are entirely preventable. Schools have a vital role to play in helping children learn about proper nutrition and how to make healthy eating choices, and all food sold or served at school should provide those healthy choices; there is no room for junk food at school!
It can feel like an uphill battle trying to combat the vast power of the food industry, which spends $10 billion per year marketing to children. Many kids aren’t getting healthy food at home and they come to school expecting to eat the sugary, high fat, low nutrient junk food that seems to be everywhere in our culture. School meal programs are both highly regulated and criminally underfunded by the federal government, and healthy, better quality food costs more than highly processed chicken nuggets and apple turnovers. Can volunteers working in their spare time really make a difference?
We believe they can, and the changes we have been able to create in our own community are the proof. Change is hard, and it takes time and enormous effort, but it can happen.
